THE GREAT RESET: IS DEMOCRACY (worldwide) IN DANGER?
The effect of covid-19 – SEGMENT 9

April 18, 2023

Dear Friends and Family,

Klaus Schwab and his critics have very different views on how COVID-19 will impact the world’s future. Schwab contends it has triggered momentous change and magnified the world’s ills. Because of magnified exposure, it has afforded us a generational, if not longer opportunity to address and solve such problems. Such “Great Reset” solutions will make the world a much better place to live in with increased sustainability.

His critics are of the opinion that the pandemic increased the wealth and power of the elites of the world, devastated the poor, severely crippled many small businesses, fueled the use of modern monetary theory, increased totalitarianism in general and government authoritarianism in particular, throughout our country. A disturbing trend if it continues.
The critics postulate that the ultimate outcome of worldwide “Great Reset” change will be determined by the populace’s fear of climate change and how it is leveraged by the elites in the Western world.

Next: Segment 10 is focused on “Digital Governance.” Both Schwab and his critics are predicting that digital governance is going to greatly increase at the sacrifice of individual privacy. Further, this is happening even at the risk of further enhancement of totalitarianism and the loss of some of our freedoms.

Happy Learning,
Harley

THE GREAT RESET: IS DEMOCRACY (worldwide) IN DANGER
THE EFFECT OF COVID–19 – EXCERPTS: SEGMENT 9

SCHWAB: CONCLUSION:
+Within this short time frame, COVID-19 has both triggered momentous changes and magnified the fault lines that already beset our economies and societies. Rising inequalities, a widespread sense of unfairness, deepening geopolitical divides, political polarization, rising public deficits and high levels of debt, ineffective and non-existent global governance, excessive financialization, environmental degradation: these are some of the major challenges that existed before the pandemic. The coronavirus has exacerbated them all. Without delay we need to set in motion the Great Reset. This is not a “nice-to-have” but an absolute necessity.

It's about making the world less divisive, less polluting, less destructive, more inclusive, more equitable and fairer than we left it in the pre-pandemic era. Doing nothing or too little, is to sleepwalk toward ever-more social inequality, economic imbalances, injustice and environmental degradation. Failing to act would equate to letting our world become meaner, more divided, more dangerous, more selfish and simply unbearable for large segments of the globe’s population. To do nothing is not a viable option.

That said, the Great Reset is far from a done deal. Some may resist the necessity to engage in it, fearful of the magnitude of the task and hopeful that the sense of urgency will subside, and the situation will soon get back to “normal.” The conviction that today’s world is better than it has ever been, while correct, cannot serve as an excuse for taking comfort in the status quo and failing to fix the many ills that continue to afflict it.

SCHWAB: THE NATURE OF PANDEMICS:
+Lessons from past pandemics tell us how hard it is to understand how, exactly when and why they end, and what their wide-ranging effects are. Throughout history, when the physical disease, measured in mortality or infection rates, subsides, the impact of the pandemic still remains. It continues to affect our lives, as economies and societies progressively adjust, and individuals strive to return to a semblance of normalcy. The psychological shock provoked by different forms of fear triggered by the disease – like the fear of illness, the feat of isolation, the fear of “others” or even the fear of the “future” – takes much longer to subside. It is already clear that COVID-19 crisis has put into motion momentous changes that will unfold in a multifaceted fashion. Some of these changes were already apparent prior to the crisis but have been accelerated (even “turbo-charged”).  Among them are the acceleration of automation and innovation, rising inequalities, the growing power of tech and surveillance, the rising rivalry between the U.S. and China, the partial retreat from globalization, the economic paradigm shift, and an increasingly fractious geopolitical landscape.

Over the past millennia, pandemics have been the rule, not the exception. This being so, how can history help us understand what lies ahead? Pandemics are by nature a shock that divides and traumatizes. As such, they tend to exacerbate the same major issues and problems that have recurred throughout human history: wars and conflicts, in equalities and impoverishment, social cohesion and strife, political turbulence, the disruption of supply and demand, debt distress – to name a few notable ones. However, because of their inherently disruptive nature, pandemics can also prove to be a force for lasting and often radical change. COVID-19 is no exception. It has revealed, two things: (1) the main fault lines that beset today’s world, like social divides, lack of fairness, limited cooperation, failure of global governance, geopolitical turmoil; but also (2) our extraordinary ability to mobilize and innovate when confronted with conditions of intense adversity. Throughout human history, this has been a key attribute of pandemics. Will it be different this time? No, except that two specific features of today’s world will render the changes that are coming more abrupt, more complicated and more far-reaching than we might imagine.

Concentration of risks and systemic connectivity: Interdependence – the by-product of technological progress and globalization – is the defining feature of the 21st century. It means that we live today on the brink of major consequential changes that are not independent from each other but are taking place simultaneously. The pandemic has occurred at very particular juncture when our economies and societies seem ill-suited to many of the challenges that lie ahead, when the geopolitical and technological landscapes are being reshaped in a way that will make them unrecognizable in just a few years and when the environment is on the brink of disaster and climate change is an existential threat.

Social Media and the Age of Fake News: Falsehoods, misinformation, disinformation and conspiracies have always existed, but today they are served and magnified by the dominance and reach of social media and the virality of fake news. Furthermore, the manner in which social media now structures communication between individuals can affect the collective ability of certain groups to form reliable beliefs. This manifests in two ways. (1) We can opt, as we so often do on social media, only to interact with people who share our beliefs and refuse to do so with people who challenge them. This creates partitions and polarization. (2) All sorts of influencers, be they government agencies, industry groups or even individuals, now have direct access to “ready-made” large groups of people with whom they can create a relation of trust and dependency, thus aggravating and even inflaming polarization. This is part of the reason why powerful anti-science movements prolong the waning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hindering both public health and, more fundamentally, our ability to move forward in unison. The abundance of fake news and its ability to magnify and manipulate polarization hinders our ability to deal successfully with the momentous collective action problems that humanity faces.

SCHWAB: THE LEGACY OF COVID: Consumption:
+Many column inches and analyses have been dedicated to the impact that COVID-19 will have on our consumption patterns. A substantial number of them state that in the post-pandemic era, we will become more conscious of the consequences of our choices and habits and will decide to repress some forms of consumption. The underlying argument supporting this hypothesis is one of environmental reset: the pandemic has acted as a dramatic eye-opener to the public at large on the severity of the risks related to environmental degradation and climate change. Heightened awareness of and acute concerns about inequality, combined with the realization that the threat of social unrest is real, immediate and on our doorstep, might have the same effect.

How might this play out? Conspicuous consumption could fall from favor. Having the latest, most up-to-date model of whatever will no longer be a sign of status but will be thought of as, at best, out of touch, and, at worst, downright obscene. Put in simple terms, in a post-pandemic world beset by unemployment, insufferable inequalities and angst about the environment, the ostentation display of wealth will no longer be acceptable. This might be another personal reset: the understanding that conspicuous consumption or excessive consumption of any kind is neither good for us nor for our planet, and the subsequent realization that a sense of personal fulfilment and satisfaction need not be reliant on relentless consumption – perhaps quite the opposite.

Behavioral Changes – Permanent vs. Transient:
+The commercial real estate industry is an essential driver of global growth. Its total market value exceeds that of all stocks and bonds combined globally. Prior to the pandemic crisis, it was already suffering from an excess of supply. If the emergency practice of working remotely becomes an established and widespread habit, it is hard to imagine what companies (if any) will absorb this oversupply by rushing to lease excess office space. The pandemic will do to commercial real estate what it has done to so many other issues: it will accelerate and amplify the pre-existing trend. If the trend of working remotely takes off, the combination of commuting not being a consideration any longer and the absence of job growth means that the younger generation will no longer chose residential renting or buying in expensive cities. Inevitably, prices will then fall. In addition, many will have realized that working from home is more climate-friendly and less stressful than having to commute to an office.

Three industries in particular flourished in the post-pandemic era: big tech, health and wellness. By and large, big tech was the resilient industry par excellence, for it emerged from this period of radical change as the biggest beneficiary. During the pandemic, as companies and their customers alike were forced to go digital, accelerate online plans, take up new networking tools and start working from home, tech became an absolute necessity, even among traditionally reluctant customers. For this reason, the combined market value of the leading tech companies hit record after record during the lockdowns even rising back above levels before the outbreak started. Digital will play a significant role in shaping the future of wellness. The combination of AI, the Internet of Things, sensors and wearable technology will produce new insights into personal well-being. They will monitor how we are and feel and will progressively blur the boundaries between public healthcare systems and personalized health creation systems – a distinction that will eventually break down.

CRITICS:  MAJOR TAKEAWAYS OF THE COVID PANDEMIC
The Rich Got Richer and the Poor Got Poorer:  Business Insider announced, citing an Oxfam report, “The 1,000 richest people on the planet recouped their COVID-19 losses within just nine months, but it could take more than a decade for the world’s poorest to recover from the economic impact of the pandemic.”
Source: The Great Reset by Marc Morano (2022)

CRITICS: KLAUS SCHWAB, COVID-19 and the GREAT RESET
Schwab popularized the term “Great Reset” in his own book, COVID-19: The Great Reset. The showcasing of COVID-19 in his title indicates how much the pandemic has inspired him and given him hope, much as it energizes all global predators. Schwab’s book appeared in July 2020 and may have established Schwab as the greatest intellectual in the globalist movement and now as the intellectual backbone of American policy under President Biden.

CRITICS: TOTALITARIANISM
Very briefly, there are several important conclusions that the facts have forced us to face – conclusions we never anticipated when we began our research.

First, the underlying purpose of the attack that drove COVID-19 policies and practices was threefold: (1) increase the power, aggrandizement, and wealth of the globalists; (2) strengthen Communist China as the ally of nearly all globalists; and (3) weaken the U.S. as a patriotic democratic-republic standing in the way of this rapacious onslaught against freedom and the well-being of humanity.

Second, the globalists had long believed that they needed a terrifying worldwide emergency to justify and enforce their assumption of power and nothing seemed better suited than a pandemic. They also saw it as a means of vastly increasing their wealth, through enforcing the vaccination of the world. In the process, they would use suppressive public health control to train humanity to be more docile and even subdue those elements of the American people who still believed in individualism and liberty – the twin anathema to globalism.
Source: COVID-19 and the Global Predators by Peter Breggin MD and Ginger Ross Breggin (2021)

A “War on Small Business”: Making matters even worse, many of the COVID-19 lockdowns and relief policies disproportionately benefited groups and businesses favored politically. On its own, the lack of funding for small businesses caused substantial harm, but when combined with the advantages that larger corporations had but many small businesses did not -- like large cash reserves, teams of lawyers and tax experts, and the ability to shift much of their operations online – the disadvantages faced by countless small businesses were crushing. Why did politicians leave many small business owners out in the cold during the height of the pandemic? And why didn’t corporate America suffer the same fate? The short answer is, the reason corporations were preserved, and small businesses destroyed is because in the grand new “stakeholder” economy dreamed up by the elites in Davos and Biden’s White House, corporations could easily be controlled. Manipulating tens of millions of small business owners would be much more difficult.

Great Reset “Fuel”: Modern monetary theory is the extremely powerful fuel needed for the machinery – the Great Reset programs – that elites are trying to use to seize control of the world. Without the MMT fuel, tyrants must turn to less desirable fuels, like outright violence, the confiscation of land, and other, often more overtly authoritarian modes of seizing control. MMT offers a different approach. It gives the Great Reset machine the power it needs to seize control without requiring gulags and it can be put into place without the need for eliminating democracy, an essential part of making any Reset scheme tolerable to Americans. But before the MMT fuel can be poured into elite’s new Great Reset tyranny machine, they first need to get enough government officials, politicians, well-connected activists and special interest groups, and powerful business leaders to believe that the MMT fuel actually works.

The reason the coronavirus crisis has been so important for the Great Reset movement is because it has shown not only that modern monetary theory can be used by governments to rapidly expand government power but also that the public in the U.S. is much more willing to accept modern monetary theory than many previously thought, even though most Americans have never heard of it.

“A Golden Opportunity”: There are at least two other reasons the pandemic has been so important for the Great Reset movement. First, it has given state and federal government officials in the U.S. more confidence than ever that they can enact radical, tyrannical, and even arbitrary mandates. Further, it shows not only that many Americans will go along with whatever their master’s in government tell them but also that they will work with government to help silence anyone who stands up against these actions. Second, it is virtually impossible to convince people that the global economy needs to be torn down and replaced with a new system when unemployment for African Americans, Hispanics, women and just about everyone else is historically low, retirement account values are soaring, and the economy seems poised to continue growing for years to come – and that’s exactly what was happening prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, there is one big flaw that needs to be overcome. How can elites justify building an entirely new economy based on economic damage and societal fears linked to a temporary crisis like the coronavirus pandemic? The truth is, they cannot – at least not successfully. They might be able to get some of the infrastructure in place; but completely overhaul the world? That is going to take a little more work. Elites hell-bent on a Great Reset need another, even more dire and dangerous “crisis” to solve. They need a crisis that will supposedly imperil human life on our planet and pose an “existential threat” to all living things. Luckily for the supporters of the Great Reset, just such a “crisis” exists: climate change. If the Great Reset proponents can convince the world that the only chance the human race has of lasting – not just enjoying economic equality, social justice, and other left-wing goals but of actual survival – is to put most of the global economic power in the hands of the ruling class, well then, now you’ve got the crisis you can hang your hat on. That’s why climate change is so important to understand.
Source: The Great Reset by Glenn Beck (2022).

The unprecedented suspension of liberties in response to the COVID-19 pandemic has emboldened the forces behind the Great Reset to achieve their centrally planned vision: monitoring, planning, censoring, crushing dissent, controlling the lives of the masses for our “safety” – all in the name of “The Science.” The very real threat of oppressive rule by unelected experts in government is now threatening to engulf the world in the wake of the COVID lockdowns, “phased re-openings,” vaccine passports, contact tracing, mask mandates, capacity limits, bans on church services and social gatherings, stay-at-home orders, and travel restrictions. These drastic limits on our liberties were put in place largely without legislative votes or public hearings. In addition, climate-inspired energy regulations, massive government spending, supply chain issues, food shortages, debt, out-of-control crime in major cities, spiraling inflation, wars, and economic “degrowth” all helped create the perfect pandemonium to empower the forces of the Great Reset.

The “listen to ‘The Science’” narrative has been very effective. It has bullied Republican politicians, conservatives, and many dissenting scientists into silence or submissiveness. You are not going to challenge COVID restrictions if you accept that “The Science” determines whether or not you are a good person, a smart person, or an evil science-denier who deserves to be jailed.

Justin Haskins, the director of the Heartland Institute warned the Great Reset is setting up “a China model of capitalism-authoritarianism.” Economic collapse, runaway inflation, surging unemployment, small business decimated, seemingly endless COVID “relief” payments from the federal government to help “solve” a problem the government needlessly created. The more the economy and society are destroyed through strict government lockdowns, the more dependent the citizens are upon government officials to loosen up restrictions and to send stimulus checks. The economic damage from the lockdowns makes people dependent on the very politicians who did this to them and creates more incentives for even bigger government expansion. Thus, the lockdowns have fast-tracked the progressive dream of a government-supplied “universal basic income” for everyone, instead of a job.
